Does anyone know if laser hair removal can alter sweat glands?
I got this done to my underarms (I’m on my 4th treatment) and it seems like I’ve been sweating a lot more than ever before. I’ve read that the sweat glands are too far into the skin to be altered but I’ve also read that they can be altered anyway so I’m not sure.
It may just be a coincidence.

you can find all about laser hair removal here

One of the functions of underarm hair is to wick the perspiration away from the skin (check this Wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underarm_hair). You may just be ‘feeling’ the perspiration on your skin where before you hair (even just stubble) helped wick it away. This is just my theory. Hope it helps.

I don’t think your actually sweating more, but because it’s bare skin you can feel it a lot easier.

Several of my friends and I have gotten our armpits lasered recently. One of my friends and I noticed increase sweating and an increase in body odor. The others didn’t really notice it as much. I think it has to do with how we were before the laser treatment. The two of us that noticed increased sweating didn’t really sweat or have much body odor before the laser hair removal. We both do now. It is a noticeable difference. I barely had any underarm hair to begin with. If I knew that this increased sweating would be a result, I wouldn’t have lasered my pits. We also did the brazilian one done. There were no strange results there.
I was searching the web for the opposite question \"whether the laser
decreases sweating\". I\’m on my second laser treatment to remove hair
and have noticed \"less\" sweating and \"less\" odor to a point where I can go
without deodorant but use it out of habit. I normally shaved everyday and
In two treatments go every two weeks.
i have now undergone 5 laser hair removal treatments under my arms. i have noticed a LOT more sweating and odor. my laser person said that it’s likely not a reaction to the laser but perhaps hormones, etc. i did electrolysis for a few months prior to getting the laser and do not remember this happening with it (but that was WAY more painful and more expensive). worst case scenario- once i have money after the laser- i’ll have to get botox under there. was told it lasts 9-12 months for about $250ish– that’s probably worth it. i also am getting my bikini line done and no difference there. very weird. guess it could be a coincidence…
I have noticed a great deal of increase in sweating and body odor with the laser hair removal treatments, as in, I didn\’t really used to have any and now I can\’t stand the smell of myself by the end of the day. I didn\’t put two and two together until now and as I have started to research it, I am horrified. They did a study on one laser and the increased sweating did not subside even after the study ended a year later. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2230.2009.03638.x/abstract
This was NEVER disclosed to me or I would not have done it. Even a small risk of permanent increase in sweating and body odor is not worth not shaving every couple days.
The only thing I have read so far that would counteract the affects are Botox treatments, and then who knows how long it will take before some messed up side effect comes from that? I am just crushed and am considering a lawsuit to try to bring attention to this issue so that they HAVE to disclose the possible risk.
Wow – I can’t believe I ran into this. I’ve been experiencing the same thing – a LOT more sweating after the laser treatments. I’m talking to the point that just standing there sometimes sweat drops will run down my body. I can’t even wear t-shirts any more because I’ll have big circles under my arm pits. I’ve been to doctors and they couldn’t tell me what was going on – and I, too thought it was most likely hormones, since I’m in early 40s. Then all of the sudden last night it hit me “what if it was the laser?” The only thing that leads me to think away from laser being the reason is that I had the laser done like 2 years ago.
Anyway I’m not sure what to do next, but I’m just glad there may be an answer to what I’m experiencing.
I had my chest, back, and upper arms done and 12 treatments later, I swear I have an odor at the end of the day. I am a healthy guy and less than 10% body fat and I can’t walk outside without sweating. I know hair is supposed to help keep you cool (which I know is kind of counter intuitive) but I rarely would go outside without a shirt on (because I was self-conscious of the hair). If this is a known side-effect, I wish I had known. Now I’m concerned as this was never disclosed to me either.
My friend had her armpits done and noticed increased sweating just like most of you. In addition, I have my bikini line done and am taking pole dancing lessons… since my treatments i notice increased sweating in my bikini area. I have to wear thick cloth shorts to continue my poling and I definitely never had that problem before. Plus my bikini line sweats more than my legs do when I get warmed-up so Im convenience that laser hair removal affects your sweating, whether it increases it or simply makes you more aware… They should definitely have warned us about this… Can we sue? hah!

I have been having the same problem with sweating and odor. I had my underarms done and wondered if there was a connection. This is really frustrating! I notice I sweat even more if I shower which I assume is from my pores opening up. This is really frustrating! I would not have undergone this treatment if I knew of this side-effect.
I am 26 years old, non-smoker, fit, and have a very healthy diet. I am not taking any medications and have verified with the doctor that my thyroid and hormone levels are fine and normal.
I have light skin and thick black hair.
It took 20 laser treatments in my underarms over the course of two years to completely eliminate the hair.
Now that the hair is all gone, I sweat profusely all the time. I used to only sweat when I exercised or was nervous. Now, from the moment after I shower, I sweat constantly for the rest of the day. Now I can only wear tank tops, and I can only wear black cotton clothing.
I feel that I should have been warned by laser hair removal clinics of this very severe side effect.
Well, that explains it.
I have wondered why I suddenly started sweating when I’m still young and nothing in my diet, environment, or hormones has changed. It’s the 12 laser treatments I had done in my underarms recently!
Too late now to undo the process.
Yes, I noticed a stink too!!! And wetness. I have had 4 treatments under my arms. I never stank before and I use deo and shower everyday. I love the smooth underarms, but I am smelly now…ugh. I am going to try some male deo, might be stronger.
I definitely think the laser treatments and increased smell are linked.
bummer.
I have had 5 treatments under my arms. I’ve never had a body odor problem before but now I can smell myself and it’s not very pleasant. Didn’t link the two until today. I also sweat a lot more now when I exercise.
Hi Ladies
I think we have all come to the conclusion that Laser Hair removal effects out sweat glands…and I am gussing this is irravesible.
This was not disclosed to any of us before starting our treatments!
does anyone know if there is any form of legal action that could be taken!
I hate the fact I have spent thousands of dollars on making myself smelly!..
if anybody knows a good lawyer I am seriously considering taking action!

I had three underarm laser treatments between May and July this year. I noticed that I was having trouble with underarm odour sometime during the summer (and I never had trouble before). I switched deodorant and bought strong laundry soap to scrub the underarms of my tops before I washed them–thinking it might be my clothes.
I have had several embarrassing situations in the last few months where I knew I smelled less than pleasant in office-type environments and I didn’t know what to do. I took to bringing extra deodorant with me.
I would not recommend underarm laser treatment to anyone. What especially bugs me is that I did this on a whim. I bought a groupon and they wouldn’t let me use it for the area I wanted, so I just got my underarms done with it since I’d already paid for–it was nothing I really wanted done. Now I have to live with the consequences. That makes me sad.
I have never had body odor issues, I would use deodorant once every few days if I knew I might work out. Now I have to put it on every morning and still stink by the end of the night. This started maybe 2-3 weeks after getting my armpits treated. I am horrified by this. I have noticed almost no reduction in hair yet significant increase in smell. I bought three treatments at a time and have used only one, but I’m afraid now to go back, what if it gets worse?
You may be feeling sweatier because of more skin now, earlier you should to have hairs so you couldn’t feel that much but still it is recommended to see a doctor.
