I was given radioactive iodine in 1990 due to a misdiagnosis. I found out that it takes approximately 2 months for the thyroid to completely die off. After mine was gone I became severely hypOthyroid even tho I was eventually put on a synthetic T4 thyroid drug.
What I know now is that RAI isn’t a good thing. There are other less invasive and permanent ways to treat hypErthyroidism which is due to an upstream problem causing the thyroid to react. The problem with RAI is that it goes after anything in the body which has iodine receptors, expecially salivary glands, mucosal linings, etc. And then there’s that issue of it making us more at risk for cancers down the road. That part scares me greatly.
Listen, there is a discussion group with a lot of people on it that have also had radioactive iodine. It’s the Yahoo group called "thyroidless". I’ve included the link along with the iodine group and the informative radioactive website that. The last link I included will help you learn how to heal after having radioactive iodine.
By the way, I totally wouldn’t ever have a second RAI treatment even for a million dollars. I’ve lived with this horror for the last 18 years…trust me.
oh don’t worry, it’s only been a little more than two months since your treatment, there’s a good chance your thyroid is still in the process of dissolving. i got RAI in august and it wasn’t until march of the next year that my thyroid was completely gone. i was more than a little frustrated since my endocrinologist assured me that it only took six weeks for the radioactive iodine to eliminate the thyroid.
the reason your blood tests are still high are because thyroid cells store some amounts of TSH and T3 hormones. when the radioactive iodine destroys your thyroid cells, the cells release the TSH and T3 hormones into your body, making your levels raise. you’re sweating because a) your thyroid levels are high and that increases your body heat, and b) your body needs to secrete that radioactive iodine and while most of it is expelled through urine, some must be expelled through sweat.
seriously, don’t worry about it. the treatment probably worked, your body just might be metabolizing it at a slower pace. if you have any more questions, feel free to email me or something.
I had radiation for thyroid cancer, the pill…131, and I know that it usually takes at least 6 months to a year for your thyroid to be killed off…as cells are being made to replace cells in our bodies, that is stopped, so it isn’t like you get the radiation and it is gone… you may need another one, but I would learn more about how long a time is usually standard. also, did you do a low iodine diet before hand? http://www.thyca.org (for thyroid cancer) has the diet info. it makes your thyroid hungry for the iodineradiation and if you do have to do it again, I would look into that as well. it is not uncommon to have more that one radiation in the thyca world, about 1/3 need 2 or more. I am in a yahoo health group for thyca, maybe there is one for graves? I know there is one for thyroid. that would be where you could find folks on the same journey with more experience. good luck and good health.

I second the diagnosis that the blood tests are still showing high because of tsh and t3 hormones. However, I strongly recommend further diagnosis.
It’s hard to avoid some misdiagnoses, thats why it is strongly been advised to have a second opinion that will try to magnifies and re-evaluate your health condition. Health is changing constantly as our body had continuously adopting to it’s environment. Asked other health professionals and then validate your laboratory results.
